The End-of-Summer Pool Care Checklist

As the long days of summer start to fade, your swimming pool has likely had plenty of use over the last couple of months. Before the colder months arrive in full force, it is time to give your pool the attention it deserves. 

Here is our end-of-summer pool care checklist to ensure clear water and longer lasting equipment all year round.

 

Pool Cleaning

After weeks of summer use, your pool will have accumulated sunscreen oils, leaves, dust, and debris. Start by skimming the surface and brushing the pool walls and floor to loosen any residue. Vacuum the pool thoroughly, paying attention to corners and steps where dirt tends to settle.

Test and Balance the Water Chemistry

Good pool care begins with maintaining a balanced water chemistry. Test for pH, chlorine, alkalinity and calcium hardness. 

  • pH should be between 7.2 and 7.6. 

  • Chlorine should stay around 1-3 ppm.

  • Total alkalinity between 80-120 ppm.

If your levels are off, adjust using the appropriate chemicals. Unbalanced water can cause scale build-up, staining and irritation to eyes and skin.

The Role of Maintenance and Energy Efficiency

In today's world, buyers are more concerned about running costs than anything. Pools that feature energy efficient heating systems, modern filtration and insulated covers are more likely to be viewed as assets. Conversely, older pools with high energy bills deter buyers. A pool that is easy and affordable to maintain will contribute more positively to perceived property value. 

Shock The Water

After heavy use, your pool can become cloudy or develop an odour. Use a chlorine shock treatment to destroy organic contaminants and refresh the water. Run your pump for at least 24 hours after shocking to ensure full circulation.

 

Check The Filtration System

Inspect the filter and give it a good clean or backwash to remove built up debris. This helps maintain strong water and prevents cloudy water as temperatures cool.

Inspect Pool Equipment

This time of year is the perfect time to check pumps, heaters, and any cleaning robots are working efficiently. Listen out for unusual noises, look for leaks. Catching small issues early can save money in the long run.

 

Manage Water Level and Drainage

With the winter weather being so unpredictable, but with high expectations of rainfall, it may be a good idea to lower your pools water level to avoid overflow. You should also make sure all drainage systems are clear so rainfall doesn't bring debris into the pool.
