The Complete Guide to Swimming Pool Liner Replacement in 2026
A new pool liner can massively improve the look and performance of your outdoor or indoor swimming pool. With modern liner materials, custom patterns and expert installation techniques, replacing your old liner not only renews your pool but also extends its lifetime and boosts durability.
What is a Pool Liner and Why Replace It?
A pool liner is the waterproof vinyl finish that forms the internal surface of many UK swimming pools. It holds the water and contributes to the overall aesthetics of the pool. High quality liners typically last up to 20 years, depending on factors like exposure to sunlight or winter conditions.
Over time, even the best liners can show signs of wear which can allow leaks or diminish the look/ feel of your pool. When this happens, a professional liner replacement is the safest and most cost effective solution.
Why Expert Installation Matters
Replacing a pool liner is complex. It’s not simply swapping one sheet of vinyl for another, it requires precise measurement, meticulous preparation of the pool shell and specialist installation tools to ensure the perfect fit and finish.
Here at Deep End Pools, we have decades of experience replacing liners across a wide variety of pool types and styles. Our team is trained to handle everything from standard rectangular pools to more complex shapes, steps and features.

Step-by-Step Liner Replacement Process
1. Initial Site Survey & Quotation
We begin with a free, no obligation visit to your pool, allowing us to assess the condition of the existing liner, check for structural issues and advise on the best option for your replacement liner. You’ll receive a clear written quotation outlining recommended work.
2. Detailed Engineer Assessment
Once the quote has been approved, our engineer visits your pool to take precise measurements and prepare the pool for its replacement liner. Then a pressure test of the pipework is conducted to identify any hidden leaks or plumbing concerns before the new liner is manufactured. Lastly, the existing pool shell is thoroughly cleaned, ensuring a smooth surface ready for the new liner.
The manufacturing time is 10-14 working days.
3. Liner Delivery and Fitment
When your custom-made liner arrives, we will return to prepare the pool shell again and check every detail before installation. Then the liner is carefully clipped into position, and any air trapped behind it is removed using high-volume vacuums. Once aligned perfectly, we make final trims around fittings such as drains or lights. The pool is then filled with water in stages, starting to the level of steps or lights before any final adjustments.
4. Balancing and Commissioning
After installation we complete the water fill up, balance the chemicals and commission your pools circulation system. Where possible, we replace old faceplates and gaskets to complement your new liner and enhance the finished look.
This entire process normally takes 15-20 working days in peak season, often quicker during quieter periods
Choosing Your New Pool Liner
As the years go on, there is a wider choice of liner finishes, colours, tile bands and patterns than before, allowing you to personalise your pools look. A high quality liner not only looks the part but also increases resistance to chemicals, UV and wear.
